The kerbside/backdoor collection of recyclable materials has begun in the pilot areas of Tupsley, Bartonsham and Hinton.
People living in these areas are asked to participate if they can.
The scheme relies on people taking the time to sort their waste into separate bags.
The purple bags take paper and textiles, the clear bags take cans and plastics, and the normal black bag takes the remainder – hopefully much reduced rubbish.
Herefordshire Council’s door to door canvassers have been out and about in the pilot area to encourage people to use the scheme and to explain how it works.
The purple and clear bags are collected on alternate weeks from the same place and at the same time that the black bag is collected.
The bags are collected in special two compartment vehicles that can be spotted around Herefordshire wearing their specially designed colourful livery with the campaign caption: “You sort – we collect – together we recycle”.
The recycling bags are taken to the newly opened Materials Reclamation Facility’ (MRF) at Rotherwas, where the contents are sorted, baled and sent for processing into new products. The bags themselves are also recycled.
The pilot scheme means any flaws encountered can be ironed out before the scheme extends across other parts of the most densely populated areas of Herefordshire.
This will happen over the next few weeks.
Every household involved will receive a starter pack two weeks before the scheme begins in their area.
The pack contains the first two bags, a calendar of collection dates and information about the scheme.
