Working in partnership for the people of Herefordshire

Local Area Forum Volunteers

A call is going out for volunteers to help more people enjoy Herefordshire’s countryside.

Herefordshire Council is looking for up to 22 voluntary members to form the Local Access Forum. This group will be responsible for providing advice on access, recreation and land-use issues across the County.

The Forum will look at broad ranging subjects including improvements to countryside access and ways of promoting the county for visitors consistent with the protection of its natural beauty. There will be opportunities to consider changes and enhancements to the existing public rights of way network.

It is anticipated that the forum will play a key role in helping to provide a more inclusive and pro-active approach to outdoor recreation within the County.

To be truly effective and representative the Council is looking for forum members who will represent a diverse range of views and interests. It’s hoped that the forum will be able to cover the concerns of land management, the conservation of species and habitats, the requirements of specific user groups and the local tourism industry.

“This is an opportunity for all members of the public; from walkers to conservationists and landowners to small businesses, to represent their views and have an input on local access issues and policy,” said Stephen Oates, Head of Engineering and Transportation, Herefordshire Council.

“Because Herefordshire is such a rural county, the effects of the Local Access Forum could be far-reaching,” added Stephen.

The establishment of the Forum is a requirement under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. It will act as a statutory advisor to the local authority and to the Countryside Agency.

Anyone wanting further information about the Local Access Forum should contact Rob Hemblade, Rights of Way Manager, on 01432 261981.
