Hereford Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to announce the painting by David Cox (1783 to 1859), of Hay on Wye, has arrived and will be on display at the Gallery, initially, from April 15 to May 13.
The painting was purchased from Sotheby's British Sale in London on March 19.
The Hereford Times first alerted the Museum to the sale and staff were grateful for the early tip-off which enabled them to move quickly in applying for a grant to support the purchase.
Thankfully, the Resource/Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund offered a substantial grant.
Generous local support has also been given by the Friends of Herefordshire Museums and Arts.
Catherine Willson, Herefordshire Council’s Collections Officer for Fine and Decorative Art, said: "It is very satisfying to see this lovely picture back here in Herefordshire.
“Without the support of the Resource/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Friends, we would simply not be able to compete on the open market for works such as this; we are extremely grateful.”
Kate Andrew, Herefordshire Council’s Principal Heritage Officer, said: “This is a beautiful addition to the collection, which will be on display initially for a month. The painting will then become a focal point for our summer exhibition 'The Art of Giving'.
“Since the painting is a water colour, we will need to limit the time the picture is on display in order to prevent light damage. “
The Summer Exhibition, from July 19 to September 7, 2003, will celebrate the centenary of the National Art Collections Fund who, like the Resource/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, have enabled the Museum to acquire many important works of art for the collection.
It will also include items of Fine and Decorative art, which have been acquired with the help of the Friends of Herefordshire Museums and Arts. Details of this exhibition will be available on the NACF website: www.artfund100.org.
