Do you know or have memories of the people who donated the benches at Long Acre Open Space and Rope Walk in Ross-on-Wye? Or perhaps you donated one of the benches yourself; if so the Herefordshire Council would like to hear from you.
The benches along the stretch of the River Wye between Wilton Bridge and the Rowing Club are now all in need of replacement. The Ross and Area Regeneration Partnership has highlighted the need, through its recent health-check, to upgrade this stretch of riverside park in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Herefordshire Council has joined forces with Ross-on-Wye Round Table to instigate a riverside enhancement scheme. This scheme will initially replace the dilapidated benches along the riverbank with twelve new seats so that people enjoying the open spaces will once again have somewhere to sit.
As part of this ‘Better Benches’ initiative Ross Round table will hold a series of fun and exciting fundraising events, to hit the target fund required to replace all 12 benches - all will be revealed in the near future. Check out the tables website www.rossroundtable.co.uk if you would like further information.
However, as part of the initiative we are trying to find out if the plaques attached to the existing benches still mean something to the people of Ross - if so then the plaques will also be replaced as part of the project.
Colin Meneaud, Parks officer said “If the plaques are not obsolete then they will be replaced so it is essential that you let us know if they mean something to you. The new benches will be of a high quality made from heavy duty wood with cast iron supports so that people can sit comfortably and enjoy the beauty of the River Wye.”
So if you are aware of Mr. J. Metcalfe, Councillor S.G.Little and Councillor R.E. Knapp who presented the benches in 1961 or if you knew or are a relation of Mary and James Harper please get in touch by contacting Colin Meneaud Tel: 01568 798344 email: ccmeneaud@herefordshire.gov.uk or write to Herefordshire Council Parks & Countryside Service, PO Box 41, Leominster HR6 0ZA.
