THE FULL AND EDITED REGISTERS

There are two versions of the register - the full version and the edited version. Your details will appear on the full version of the register, but you can choose whether or not your details appear on the edited register. The full register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime, and checking applications for credit. The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.

What is the Electoral Register?

The Electoral Register is the list of everyone who is registered to vote. You must be on the register to vote in elections and referendums. You are not automatically registered, even if you pay Council Tax.

There are two versions of the register - the full version and the edited version. Your details will appear on the full version of the register, but you can choose whether or not your details appear on the edited register. The full register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime, and checking applications for credit. The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.

How do I register to vote?

You can register to vote at any time. If you are not registered or you have moved address complete the Application to be Registered as an Elector form. Or you can phone or e-mail us and we will send a form to your home address. You will need to provide 2 forms of proof of name and address when you return the form if you have downloaded it from our website. If any of your details have changed (other than your address), or you would like to opt out of the edited register you can tell us by filling in the Amendment to the Register of Electors form.

Who is eligible to register/vote?

To be eligible for inclusion on the Register of Electors you must be:

  • Over 18, or reach the age of 18 during the period in which the register is in force (from December 1st to November 30th the following year)
  • A British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union Citizen - Click here for a list of eligible nations.
  • Resident at the property you wish to register at either on 15th October or on the date on which you apply under rolling registration

Please note foreign nationals who are not Commonwealth or EU citizens, are not eligible to register or vote.

All applications to be registered as an elector are subject to public inspection to allow for objections to be made in accordance with the Representation of the People Act.

Monthly Registration Statistics.

Click on the resource box below for details of the additions to and removals from the electoral register every month from December to September. During the Annual Canvass (Oct and November) there are no monthly statistics whilst the revised register is being prepared.
