Paying your Council Tax

The financial year runs from 1st April through to 31st March and in a full year council taxpayers are entitled to pay by 10 monthly instalments. Where the bill is issued later than April (because you have moved during the year) you are entitled to the number of full months left in the year less one, e.g. if the bill is issued on 15th May you will get 9 instalments, because there are 10 whole months left until March less one.

How to pay your Council Tax

Herefordshire Council is keen to make paying council tax as convenient as possible and therefore offers a wide range of payment options which are detailed below:

Paying by Direct Debit

This is the cheapest and easiest method of payment and we offer a choice of 4 payment dates. You can pay on the 1st, 10th, 15th or 26th of the month. We believe this choice of payment dates will enable you to choose a date that best suits your budget. You will always be told in advance of any changes to the monthly payments and you can cancel the direct debit at any time. In the unlikely event of an error occurring, you are guaranteed an immediate refund of any payment which breaks the terms of your instruction. Paying by Phone using a Debit Card

To pay by debit card, telephone us on 01432 383525. This service is currently available during the following times:

Monday to Wednesday: 8.45 am to 4.45 pm
Thursday: 8.45 am to 4.00 pm
Friday: 8.45 am to 4.30 pm

We are hoping to offer this as a 24 hour service at a future date.

Paying in Person at any Post Office or Payzone Outlet

You can pay at any Post Office or Payzone outlet using a council tax payment card. A list of these locations can be downloaded at the foot of this page. To obtain a payment card, please contact the Council Tax Office by emailing counciltax@herefordshire.gov.uk, telephoning 01432 260360 or calling at one of the Council's offices listed on the Contact Information page.

Paying by Post

Send your payment to the Payment Section, Herefordshire Council, PO Box 224, Hereford, HR1 2XW. Do not send cash. Cheques should be made payable to 'Herefordshire Council'. Receipts will not be issued for payments received by cheque.
