Important notice

Herefordshire Council Research Team are currently developing a new website, drawing together information currently presented on the Herefordshire Council and Herefordshire Partnership sites.  The new site should go "live" in January 2010.  You may need to update any bookmarks or links you have to either of the current sites.

2001 Census

The last census of population took place on April 29th 2001 and was carried out by the Office for National Statistics. Population estimates for Herefordshire were released at the end of September 2002.

Key Statistics for the county were released in February 2003 and for wards and output areas (small areas of about 125 households) in July 2003 (see 'Key Statistics' in the left-hand menu). No information was released for parishes until March 2004, and what is available depends on the size of the parish, but the Research Team compiled parish profiles using output areas. Please contact us for these.

Census population counts for wards and parishes are available to download from the box below. Please note that no more recent estimates for parishes are available but current estimates for wards and lower super output areas (LSOAs - statistical geographies of about 1,500 people) can be found in the 'Population' section.

More information on a county level was released in May 2003, including data relating to particular groups (theme tables), tables looking at one factor e.g. marital status and cross-tabulated data (standard tables). These are all listed below (see 'Additional Census information').

Origin-Destination tables of migration and workplace flows were obtained in 2005, and an analysis of where Herefordshire's workers live and where Herefordshire's residents work is available to download from the first box below.

The census remains the only source of many useful pieces of information, for instance levels of limiting long-term illness; self-employment; working from home; car availability; owner-occupation of houses; provision of unpaid care. Where this is the case, census figures are included in our most recent area profiles for wards in Herefordshire. Analysis of relevant census data, and the data itself, can also be accessed from the State of Herefordshire report.

Additional Census information

The following information is available and a full list of tables can be downloaded from the second box below.

The types of tables are:

  • Theme tables: data relating to particular groups e.g. children, older people
  • Univariate tables: tables looking at one factor e.g. age, marital status, broken down into various categories
  • Standard tables (county and ward level only): which cross tabulate data from the Census under various themes such as access to services, health and care.
  • Census Area Statistics (output area/parish level): these are similar to standard tables with slightly broader categories to protect individual identities for small areas.

Please contact the Research Team if you would like any of the tables listed.
