Your right to access information

The Data Protection Act gives you the right to apply for a copy of specific information held about you. You can, if you wish, appoint someone to apply for you e.g. a solicitor, or member of your family.

To help you and ensure confidentiality, we will need to ask for any request to be made:

  1. in writing (please see 'making a request to obtain information about you' below)
  2. with sufficient information to locate the data requested
  3. with sufficient evidence to confirm your identity
  4. the fee of £10.00

We will acknowledge safe receipt of your request within 10 working days. We will provide the information you seek within 40 working days of payment of the fee or the provision of the details that we need to complete the search, whichever is the later.

This council cannot and is not by law obliged to comply with a request for information on the basis of "What does the council hold on me?" or "give me all information?". We are entitled to ask reasonable questions to identify what information you require and what your working and business connections are with this council to help us locate where the data may be held. Please help us to help you.

The council has produced a leaflet "Personal Information, Your right to Know" which gives full details of your rights to access personal information.
