Making Energy Sustainable in Herefordshire

Delivering significant savings in carbon emissions will do this.  The savings will derive from the use of small-scale and sensitively developed renewable energy schemes at a local level.  It is also envisaged that the interest created, and debates raised, through schemes like this will encourage the host and neighbouring communities to embrace other ‘low-carbon’ opportunities.

The MESH project aimed to broadly aid parishes within the LEADER+ area through general advice and the promotion of information and resource availability.  The focus areas Kington, Kingsland and Brilley are “beacon” communities, with the official project launch hosted by Kington in March 2006.

Through these three areas, the project investigated the opportunities of using and/or implementing any available or existing options for renewable energy.  Through using sustainable energy, and producing some electricity and heat locally, there is an emphasis on avoiding “imports” from outside of Herefordshire.

In addition to aiding these communities in choosing the best renewable resources for their area (i.e: hydro-electricity, waterwheels, low-carbon heat sourcing), they will also raise awareness of and promote:

• The production of environmentally friendly and locally distinctive products
• The heritage and cultural aspects of the river, flood plains and valleys
• Engage local people and communities in the process of change
• Encourage sound water source management

Effectively, the project is implementing other renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in local homes, businesses and public buildings in the areas, in sympathy with the built and natural environment, as a demonstration of practical commitment to fighting Climate Change.
