Re-registering a Birth

There are two different types of re-registration

1. Re-registration of a child's birth following the natural parents marriage

If the parents have married each other since the birth was registered, the birth should be re-registered to accurately record the current legal status of the child.

A form is available from any of our registration offices which must be completed by both parents. An appointment can then be made for either parent to attend the office for the birth to be re-registered. The marriage certificate and child's birth certificate should accompany the application and a request for the child's surname to be changed may be part of this process.

2. Adding the natural father's details

If the natural parents were not married to each other at the time of the birth and the father's details were not included when the birth was registered it may be possible to re-register the birth to include the father's details. Re-registration will give parental responsibility to the father as well as the mother.

A form is available from any of our registration offices which must be completed by both parents. An appointment can then be made for both parents to attend the office for the birth to be re-registered. If it is not possible for both parents to attend the office, one parent may complete a statutory declaration - please contact 01432 260565 for further details. The child's birth certificate should accompany the application. It may also be possible to change the child's surname as part of this process.
