A Speed Indicator Device (SID) is an educational tool used to inform drivers and riders of their speed. SIDs are temporary signs that can collect speed data and will record the date, time and speed of passing vehicles. This data however is anonymous.
The purpose of the data is to give an overall picture of the speed of vehicles travelling through a community.
SIDs can be requested by any Parish or Town Council after reading the council’s procedure document and returning the signed declaration form and site plan showing the area for the SID(s) to be placed.
Once the Road Safety Unit receives a request then pre speed data is collected. Only if there is evidence of speeding will we pursue with the request.
A joint site visit between a member of the road safety team and the Parish Council is arranged to discuss any issues regarding the site requested for the SID(s). A risk assessment is also carried out.
Once plans have been agreed and the site is assessed then the procedure of installing the sockets and SIDs are put into place.
The cost to the Parish or Town Council is subsidised by Herefordshire Council. The installation of one socket costs £247.89 plus £100 for each SID installed and dismantled. All costs are plus VAT.
