The training is delivered in 3 sessions:
Each child will be given a numbered hi-vis vest to wear during the practical part and after they have completed the assessed walk they will each receive a certificate. They will also receive a Highway Code book for young road users and a booklet for parents.
During weeks 2 and 3 we will need a number of adult helpers to assist with the practical sessions and ask the school to arrange these. The number of helpers will depend on the route and this can be discussed nearer the date of the first session.
To book the training for your pupils or for further information please email amann@herefordshire.gov.uk or telephone (01432) 260947.
More than 21,000 children were killed or injured in Great Britain during 2008/09 as a result of road accidents. Most of these accidents happen near home and many on journeys to and from school.
The road safety unit distributes, via schools at the beginning of the academic year, road safety information packs to all parents of children starting school for the first time. This pack contains information on in car safety, pedestrian safety and advice on parking outside schools.
It is hoped that parents work through the information with their child.
Road safety talks delivered by Road Safety Officers are offered to all primary schools. The talks generally last about one hour and involve discussion, a DVD and activities for the pupils. The topics discussed depend on the age of the pupils. For reception, year 1 and year 2 we discuss why it is important not to cross the road on their own, who to cross with, the importance of holding hands and the meaning of STOP, LOOK, LISTEN.
For older pupils we discuss risk taking and discuss the Green Cross Code. Pupils are given road safety workbooks and handouts at the end of the session.
If you are a teacher and would like a road safety presentation, please contact the road safety team on 01432 260946.
The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) scheme has been running successfully since 2001 with 58 schools joining last year. The aim is to empower children to highlight road safety issues within their school.
The scheme is run and supported by Herefordshire Council. Every new academic year primary schools are invited to nominate two year 6 pupils to become JRSOs for their school.
Each JRSO receives a certificate, badge and a pack with ideas on how to deliver the road safety messages.
The chosen pupils:
Every month the JRSOs receive from us the necessary information to deliver and promote the topic. Examples include pedestrian or cycle safety and in car safety. They do this by running competitions, developing a road safety drama or song, giving assembly talks and maintaining a notice board.
If your school would like to join the JRSO scheme please contact the road safety team on 01432 260946 or e mail jfreeman@herefordshire.gov.uk
The Safer Routes to School scheme aims to spend an annually agreed amount, from the council’s budget, on improving safety and making it possible for children to travel to school in a more sustainable fashion.
Schemes are based on what the school has requested in its School Travel Plan, or Travel Plan Review. The schemes vary from small projects like dropped kerbs and new signs, to major schemes such as a 20mph zone around the school.
Schools are ranked each year in our Safer Routes to School prioritisation list, which can be downloaded below. Schools without current Travel Plans and schools whose Travel Plans do not include any requests for schemes are not included in the ranking.
