Bogus callers come in many shapes and sizes. They often work with a partner; while one of them distracts you the other will enter your house to take your possessions or money.
Typical excuses to gain access to your property include claiming balls have been kicked in to your garden, missing pets, workmen claiming to be from a utility company (particularly 'the water board') wanting to check your pipes/supply or people offering gardening services.
Bogus Officials are the most common category of bogus callers but also the easiest to prevent.
Genuine utility workers will want you to check their identity before you let them in. Always check their identity card and if you have any doubts, ring up and confirm that the caller is genuine.
You should always:
A bogus repairman may use a very good and insistent sales talk to get you to employ him straight away.
If you have not had your drains cleaned, your roof fixed or your house painted for a few years, then another day or two will not make any difference.
Get several written quotes from trustworthy firms and get recommendations from friends or neighbours before employing anyone to undertake work.
This sort of fraudster will try and buy furniture and antiques for far less than its true value. Again the best advice is to take your time and get estimates from local dealers or a local auctioneer.
