Guided walks

Various local groups and organisations lead guided walks in the County including the Herefordshire Council Ranger Team, Herefordshire Archaeology, Herefordshire Ornithological Club, Herefordshire Action For Mammals, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Office and Herefordshire Ramblers Association.

These walks allow you to explore the county with the luxury of a knowledgeable and experienced guide. When you attend a guided walk please ensure you wear appropriate walking shoes and clothing and bear in mind the weather conditions.

  • The walks are free unless stated, but you must book your place to help us manage numbers.
  • Please only bring your dog if it says dogs are welcome.
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bats and moths night at Bodenham
Saturday 27th August 2011  7pm until as late as you like!

Join Herefordshire Moth Group and the Council’s Countryside Service for a “four in one” celebration of the County’s biodiversity. In Herefordshire's Year in the Orchard also celebrate International Year of the Bat and European Bat Night with a bat walk around the orchard at Bodenham Lake and its locality, then return to support European Moth Night seeing what native and migratory moths we can attract in the orchard and from the surrounding area.

No under 12’s. All under 16’s must be accompanied.
No dogs (on bat walk). Walk will involve crossing uneven terrain in the dark

Queenswood early Autumn colour photography walk
Thursday 22nd September 2011 3pm - 7pm

Join Nick Meers at Queenswood Country Park, this time to catch some early autumn colour in the arboretum. Camera essential, tripod recommended, suitable for those with knowledge of the manual settings on digital Bridge and SLR cameras.

The history and wildlife of Moccas Park Sunday
25th September 2011 10am - 12noon

Join Tim Dixon, Natural England's Senior Reserves Manager for Herefordshire and Worcestershire for a walk round Moccas Park. Moccas has been described as one of the most important historic deer parks in the country. This is a rare opportunity to access this privately owned park which is managed by Natural England in the company of Tim Dixon who has been responsible for the property in recent years. Sorry no dogs.

Apple harvest at Bodenham Lake nature reserve
Sunday 9th October 2011 10am - 1pm

In Herefordshire’s Year in the Orchard, join the site ranger at Bodenham Lake to help pick the apples in the community orchard. Apple juice and cider tasting included.

Dusk Deer Walk Saturday
15th October 2011 5pm - 6.30pm

Join Countryside Ranger Jim Key for an evening walk in Haugh Woods with the chance to see deer during their rutting season. Sorry no dogs. Please bring a torch and binoculars. Dress appropriately. This walk is not suitable for children under 12 – all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Distance: Up to 3 miles, route and terrain will vary according to what we might see – expect steep uneven ground and surface vegetation.

Seed Gathering Sunday Sunday
16th October 2011 2pm - 4pm

Walk around Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum looking at the seeds and fruits of autumn. James Bisset, Principal Countryside Officer will guide you around the Park talking about tree propagation, management, history, right tree for the right place, fruit trees and Year in the Orchard and Thomas Andrew Knight - Herefordshire's unsung horticultural hero. As a special treat during the walk you will be allowed to collect seed from the Arboretum's collection of 'exotic' trees from around the world so please come prepared with some paper bags and a pen.

Meet: Behind the Country Park Information Centre Cost: Free, but a donation to Queenswood Coronation Fund appreciated. No booking required just turn-up. Dogs on a lead. No children under 12.

Art with Autumn Colour Tuesday
25th October 2011 10.30am - 12noon

Join local artist Lisa Pendlebury and Countryside Ranger Jim Key to create some art with autumn colour at Queenswood using the fallen leaves and other natural objects. This event is aimed at children. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Creative Workshop: Wreath Making
Sunday 4th December 2011, 11.00am - 12.30pm and 1.00pm - 3.30pm.

Come along to Queenswood and make a traditional festive wreath using natural hedgerow materials to take away with you and decorate your home!

Annual lantern walk
