Herefordshire Council is responsible for the CCTV network across the county, which includes co-ordinating operations with external agencies such as West Mercia Police and managing the CCTV Control Room and maintenance contracts.
Herefordshire currently has 40 CCTV cameras, with 23 in Hereford, five in Ledbury and six each in Leominster and Ross-on-Wye.
CCTV plays a crucial role in detecting crime and assisting with incidents by providing Police Officers on the ground with vital up to the minute information, while gathering images which can be used as evidence against offenders. From 1st April 2010 - 31st March 2011, the county's cameras noted and assisted with 5453 incidents.
The CCTV Control Room also operates a pub and retail radio scheme, which allows business premises across the county to link together to quickly report any crime and community safety issues, such as alcohol related disorder and theft.
CCTV footage is recorded and kept for a maximum of 31 days, in line with recommendations from the Government's Information Commissioners Office.

New CCTV cameras have been installed around Hereford Cathedral, as part of its recent development.
The development project began after Hereford Cathedral and Hereford Cathedral's Perpetual Trust visualised creating a safe and attractive area within the Cathedral's grounds for the county's residents and visitors to enjoy.
Herefordshire Council's CCTV became involved after the Perpetual Trust made a request for extra cameras to be erected to assist with monitoring anti-social behaviour in the area. The three new Cathedral Close cameras, which were funded through National Lottery grants, will be routinely monitored by the CCTV Control Room, with Hereford Cathedral contributing towards the annual operating costs.
Debbie Stringer, Commissioning Officer (CCTV), said: "We're privileged to have been involved with such an exciting development and are delighted it has been such a great success. The new CCTV cameras are already helping to provide a safe and enjoyable place for those visiting the area."
She added: "Herefordshire is already a safe county to live, work and visit and our CCTV cameras are an important asset to help it remain this way."
Michael Tavinor, Dean of Hereford Cathedral, said: "We are quite simply delighted with the outcome of the project and although it's been five years of hard work, it has certainly been worth it."
He added: "We are happy to contribute towards the CCTV monitoring costs, as the introduction of the new cameras means we can keep any issues of anti-social behaviour to a minimum. This ensures we're able to provide a safe environment, so we can all enjoy the Cathedral in a truly worthy setting."
