There are 20 cameras in Hereford, five in Ledbury, five in Leominster and six in Ross.
CCTV plays a crucial role in detecting crime, assisting with incidents by providing Police Officers on the ground with vital information, and gathering images that can be used as evidence against offenders.
In the first six months of 2007, the county's cameras recorded 2131 incidents, nearly half of which picked up by CCTV alone.
These included detecting anti social behaviour, intervening in disputes before any injury or damage occurred, and alerting police to thefts and criminal damage so the offenders could be caught quickly.
A major project to link Herefordshire shops and pubs to the main
CCTV control room has recently been completed.
Until recently, shops and pubs in Leominster, Ledbury and Ross have
only been able to talk to other shops, pubs and local police
officers in their town. However, the system has been upgraded to
allow direct contact with CCTV operators.
The direct link will allow control room operators to immediately assist with incidents, gathering images that can be used as valuable evidence. The cameras will also help to improve crime detection rates and locate offenders.
