Farmers Markets

In 2011 the Herefordshire Farmers Markets Group (HFMG) took over managing their own markets from the previous partnership with Herefordshire Council.
The National Association of Farmers Markets was set up in 1999 to ensure quality standards and support for markets and HMFG is a member of the Association.
Farmers markets enable local producers to sell their own produce directly to consumers on a regular basis. All stallholders are members of HFMG - this enables high standards to be maintained for the produce being sold and gives reassurance to the consumers that the producers meet the national and local requirements to sell at farmers markets.
There are five national principles for Farmers Markets:
- All food must be locally produced
- All food must be the seller's own produce
- An approved representative of the principal producer must attend
- Markets must have a freely available policy, which explains how they are supporting more sustainable production
- Markets may adopt other rules provided they do not conflict with the other principles
