The scheme is being delivered by Herefordshire Council following its development by ESG Herefordshire Ltd., and is funded by Advantage West Midlands.
The scheme comprises a culvert which will divert floodwaters to the River Wye before they enter the City. The culvert runs from the Yazor Brook at Credenhill, to the west of Hereford, to the River Wye at Old Weir Farm, west of Stretton Sugwas. The culvert is 1.4 km long and it is anticipated that the scheme will operate on average twice a year, diverting over two thirds of floodwaters in the Brook safely to the Wye. Normal flows in the Yazor Brook heading into Hereford will be unaffected.
The scheme has been drawn up over a number of years following a full consideration of alternatives and in continuing consultation with the Environment Agency, ESG partners and the local community. Planning permission was granted in November 2009.
The council made the Compulsory Purchase Order for the land and rights needed for the scheme. Objections to the Order were heard by an Inspector at a public inquiry commencing on Wednesday 4 August 2010 at the Shirehall, Hereford.
By letter dated 7 January 2011 the Secretary of State decided to accept the Inspector’s recommendation to confirm the County of Herefordshire District Council (Yazor Brook Flood Alleviation Scheme) Compulsory Purchase Order 2010 with modifications. Details of the Compulsory Purchase Order and its confirmation can be found in the resources box below, including a copy of the notice of confirmation of the order.
