Rural Shop Improvement Grant

The Herefordshire Rural Shop Improvement Grant is a discretionary grant scheme that aims to enhance the future viability of rural shops in Herefordshire in order to safeguard vital services for people living in rural areas.

Because we only have limited funds, we have to limit the grant we are able to offer.  This means that we will limit the grant to a maximum of £5,000 or 90%, of the total eligible project cost, whichever is the lesser.

Who can apply?

The owner, landlord or the lessee of a general village stores which sells a variety of goods. Priority will be given to shops at threat of closure, particularly those that offer a Post Office Service.

Farm shops, Community shops and Franchises are not eligible for this scheme. However, there may be other funding available so please contact us for further information.

Eligible costs include:-

  • Refurbishment to the shop interior;
  • Purchases of equipment e.g. display cabinets, refrigeration;
  • Training or advice.

Applications will need to demonstrate the difference the work or activity will make to the business and the local community.

Eligible shops are those located in a rural village more than 3 miles outside Hereford City Centre or a Market Town.

How do we apply?

There is an application form that will need to be completed and submitted with a minimum of two quotes for each item of work or equipment. We will also require a copy of any relevant permissions needed to carry out the work and a copy of your lease or proof of ownership.

  • ring the Delegated Grants and Programmes Team on (01432) 260753
  • or email delegatedgrants@herefordshire.gov.uk and a form can be emailed to you
