Herefordshire Shop Front Grant Scheme

The Herefordshire Shop Front Grant Scheme is a discretionary grant scheme that aims to enhance the physical appearance of independent retail shops and create a thriving retail experience for visitors to and residents for Herefordshire.

Who can apply?

The owner or the lessee of the property can apply, provided the terms of the lease do not prohibit such work. Properties that have received a grant within the last 5 years through previous shop front grant schemes will not be eligible to apply.

An eligible shop front includes independent retail premises. Retail for the benefit of this grant is:-
"The sale of goods or commodities in small quantities directly to consumers".

This grant directly excludes banks, building societies, private residences, franchises and charity shops. Your shop must be located in Herefordshire.

How much can we apply for?

Because we only have limited funds, we have to limit the grant we are able to offer. This means that we will limit the grant to a maximum of £2,000 or 50%, of the total eligible project cost, whichever is the lesser. 

Eligible works include:-

• Replacement of a modern shop front and/or signage with something more appropriate to the age and style of the building and character of the surroundings.
• Restoration/repair and painting of existing acceptable shop front.
• Reinstatement of historical, original or traditional architectural features.

How do we apply?

There is an application form that will need to be completed and submitted with a minimum of two quotes for each element of work, a copy of the relevant permissions, and copy of your lease or proof of ownership. Acceptance of any application is dependent on you having contacted and discussed your project proposal with the relevant conservation officer. They can advise you on matters of design, acceptable colour schemes, planning, listed building, or historic building consent requirements.

Applications must be submitted by 26th April 2010 by 4:30pm to be considered. It may take up to 6 weeks for applications to be processed and offer letters issued. Work must not start until an offer letter is received, retrospective works are not eligible.
